Our courses can be found in the online course directory of the University of Vienna (scroll down to 13.01).
Course types
Courses are characterized by continuous assessment (prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltungen) or test assessment (nichtprüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltungen).
- Lectures (Vorlesungen, VO) are “nichtprüfungsimmanent”. Students are not obliged to be present, and the course assessment is based on a written or oral examination at the end of the course.
- Continuous assessment is characteristic of exercises (Übungen, UE; this type also includes the language courses), Konversatorien (KO), proseminars (PS) and seminars (SE). In these courses, the regular presence of students is normally required, and the course assessment is based on various factors (active presence and participation, exercises or tests during the semester, etc.). These courses can end with a closing examination, but its results cannot constitute more than 50% of the overall assessment of the course. Teachers are obliged to inform their students about the assessment criteria at the beginning of every course.
Languages and schedules
As a rule, the language of our teaching is German. On language courses, the target language (Hungarian, Finnish, Estonian) is used alongside the teaching medium, and some courses for advanced students can also be taught in Hungarian or Finnish. Visiting teachers can teach in English or in other languages.
Note! The obligatory courses of our B.A. and M.A. programmes can be offered only once a year, in some cases even only once in two years. Please pay attention to this when planning your schedules. More information and recommendations can be found in the curricula.
Registration and deregistration
For registration and deregistration, students are requested to use the U:SPACE system. (More information on the StudentPoint website.)
IMPORTANT: Registration to a continuous-assessment (prüfungsimmanent) course can only be cancelled within four weeks from the beginning of the semester! For students who remain registered after this deadline has passed but fail to actively participate at the course, the course will be graded as "failed".
