2025 Winter School of Finno-Ugric Studies
The 2025 Winter School of Finno-Ugric Studies will be held at the University of Vienna between 17 and 22 February 2025 (Monday through Saturday).
The winter school will be a hybrid teaching event: students can participate in person, or over the Internet. There is a limited number of slots available for in-person participation. There are no participation fees, but we also cannot provide travel grants this year. Please apply for assistance at your home universities and make your own travel & accommodation arrangements. If you wish to participate (either in person or digitally), please register here by 13 December; we will inform accepted students by the end of the following week. Prospective participants will receive further information in the due course of time.
The preliminary agenda for this winter school is:
- Language courses (students must choose one when registering):
- Mansi (taught by Daria Zhornik, LMU Munich)
- Karelian (taught by Johanna Laakso, University of Vienna)
- Workshop on quotative strategies (taught by Denys Teptiuk, University of Tartu)
- Workshop on Bible translations as data for comparative studies (taught by Ksenia Shagal, LMU Munich & Jeremy Bradley, University of Vienna & Johannes Hirvonen, LMU Munich)
- Guest lectures:
- Rogier Blokland (Uppsala University): The very first text in Saami: a new discovery
- Riho Grünthal (University of Helsinki): Causative alternation in the Uralic languages
- Third guest lecture to be announced
- A student colloquium
Updates and a preliminary schedule will be published on this page.
Students are encouraged to give an active contribution at the winter school, either in one of the workshops or in the student colloquium. Students who participate in all teaching events at the winter school are awarded 5 ECTS if they give an active contribution and 3 ECTS if they do not.
Feel free to forward this announcements to your friends and colleagues; if you want to never miss an international teaching event again, you can sign up to our mailing list here.
Hoping to see you in Vienna in February!
